Prevention, Emergency Response, and the Comox Fire Training Centre

Comox Fire Rescue provides a variety of preventive and emergency services to a population of over 18,000 in an area of 16 square miles. This includes the Town of Comox, the Comox Fire Protection Improvement District, the Bates Huband Local Service Area (Regional District of Comox-Strathcona), and the Comox Indian Band. They also operate the Comox Fire Training Centre, which trains firefighters from all over Vancouver Island, and even parts of BC and the rest of Canada. The training centre is certified by the JIBC.

Comox Assistant Chief Rick Shelton

Rick Shelton is a full time Assistant Chief, and has spent his entire fire service career with Comox Fire Rescue after joining in 1981. He is currently Assistant Chief of Operations and Training, and amongst duties such as recruitment, training and apparatus maintenance, coordinates training and staffing for the Comox Fire Training Center. Chief Shelton also works as an adjunct instructor for the Justice Institute of BC,  educating firefighters by delivering Emergency Scene Management courses. He also worked as a Fire Team Leader at the 2010 Olympic Games in Whistler. Chief Shelton has completed the 4th and final level of his JIBC Fire Officer Certificate, and believes you can never stop learning, or hold back change.

His other passions are his family, fishing, playing ice hockey and backpacking the world with his wife Deb.
